PURPOSE

When working on the BMW S54 engine of the E46 M3, Active Autowerke has found that additional horsepower can be attained with the installation of power pulleys. The S65 BMW V10 engine is no different where it also has to drive components like the the air conditioning and power steering. These ancillary components actually take away power because they create a load on the engine since they all share the same drive belt design. Active Autowerke has developed a power pulley kit that reduces the drag on specific pulleys while allowing others to remain at their same efficiency. The end result is unleashing untapped power just by redesigning the the drive ratios of the engine pulleys. An additional 12+ horsepower is measured on our in house Mustang dyno when compared against a stock BMW V10.

What was a solid block of T6061 billet aluminum will now be transformed into precise component with a calculated pulley diameter, proper groove pitch, and true belt alignment with a calculated pulley offset. The exterior is also treated in a hard, black anodized finish that is strong and durable to give a smooth and quiet operation that will be trouble-free.

All the necessary parts are included in the kit making for a relative simple, easy installation that looks similar to factory when installed and it makes power. It can be fully reversible back to original if the need arises.

The power pulley is very modular in design and complements very well with other Active Autowerke performance products like the Active perfomance software or the Active performance exhaust. Truly a good start for the BMW M enthusiast.

Machined from 6061-T6 aerospace aluminum, Macht Schnell Performance Underdrive Pulleys are strong as well as lightweight to limit parasitic drag from the accessories within a moderate level for maximum performance on or off the track. After machining and engraving, pulleys are then T3 hard anodized for additional strength, anti-corrosion & wear resistance.

Our DualDrive design replaces the Crank Accessory & Power Steering Pulleys, resulting in a 18-20 HP and 16-20ft. lbs TQ gain for the M5/M6 and a 9-14 HP and 7-9ft. lbs TQ gain for the M3. Gains are due to a reduction in power required to turn accessories; an increase in accessories lifespan due to lower speed will also result. All factory harmonics/balancing are undisturbed.

Macht Schnell Performance Underdrive Pulleys have no negative effect on accessory operation and come fully equipped with new belts

ABOUT POWER PULLEYS

By gearing down the fluid resistance accessories (water pump, power steering), less engine power is diverted to spinning the pumps, thereby allowing your engine to spool up more quickly and produce more overall power.

Kit includes replacement water pump pulley, power steering pump pulley and new serpentine belt.

No detrimental effect whatsoever to your car's cooling and steering system, as by about 5000 revs the pumps are already working at their maximum capacities.

Whereas some other aftermarket pulley kits also include a replacement alternator pulley, we do not subscribe to this method of reduction. By reducing the alternator's ability to provide adequate voltage to the system, you may encounter electrical issues or system shortfalls not covered by the manufactures warranty.

On most modern BMWs, the crank pulley does more than just drive the accessories (water pump, A/C compressor, power steering pump, and alternator), it acts as a harmonic balancer for the crankshaft of the motor. When you remove this weighted, balanced component from the front of the motor and replace with a lightened, underdriven crank pulley, you can accelerate internal engine component wear since the crank is no longer weighted on this end.

Some companies offer just a crank pulley, which when underdriven, will then underdrive ALL of the associated accessories. This can lead to serious engine damage.

Application Notes

1. E36 328 models require last 7 digits of VIN in order to supply the correct power steering pulley. Include VIN with your order please.

2.Any power pulley kit which does include a replacement crankshaft pulley allow for the factory harmonic balancer to remain in place.

3.E39 M5 tensioner pulley requires minor modification of the factory tensioner bracket for installation. E39 M5 pulley kit also includes replacement A/C belt.

4.E60 M5/E63 M6 includes overdriven alternator pulley, which compensates for the underdriven crank pulley.

5.E46 M3 RACE pulley kit includes underdriven alternator and crank pulley. This pulley kit is STRICTLY for dedicated track/race cars (not cars that see street duty). A/C is no longer used. This is the same kit used on the Grand-Am Automatic Racing M3s. The crank pulley has been designed to accept a dry-sump cog. The STREET and RACE kit use the same size belt.
